Determine the weight of 1,000 sheets (M-weight) of a given sheet size, using length, width and basis weight.
Rounded ream weight = (Area of given sheet size x Basis weight) / Area of paper
M-Weight = Rounded ream weight x 2
The below is an example M-Weight calculation for a sheet of 11” x 17” book paper with a basis weight of 70 lbs.
Rounded ream weight: (11” x 17”) x 70 lbs. / (25” x 38”) = 13.78 lbs.
M-Weight: 13.78 lbs. x 2 = 27.56 lbs.
Ream weight rounding guidelines: The area of the given sheet size is 11” x 17” = 187 sq. in. Since this is less than 336 sq. in., ream weight should be rounded to the nearest hundredth of a lb.
Please keep in mind, depending on the mill, different methods to calculate M-weight may be used.
All M-weights can vary in basis weight, especially in products of a higher caliper such as SBS and recycled board.

Find the basis weight for a ream of paper, based on its weight in grams per square meter (GSM).
Basis Weight = (Area of paper x Grams per sq. meter) / 1406.5
The below example is a basis weight calculation for a ream of 25” x 38” book paper that weighs 67.3 grams per sq. meter.
Basis Weight: (25” x 38”) x 67.3 / 1406.5 = 45 lbs.
Basis weight rounding guidelines: Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Find the weight in grams per square meter (GSM) for a ream of paper based on its basis weight.
Grammage = (Basis weight x 1406.5) / Area of paper
The below example is a grammage calculation for a ream of 25” x 38” book paper that has a basis weight of 45 lbs.
Grammage: 45 x 1406.5 / (25” x 38”) = 67 grams per sq. meter (GSM)
Grammage rounding guidelines: Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Estimate the number of pages per inch of paper (PPI) based on the sheet’s thickness (caliper).
PPI = 2 / Caliper
The below example is a PPI calculation for 100# gloss coated cover with an average caliper of .0095 inches per sheet.
PPI: 2 / 0.0095 = 211 pages per inch (PPI)
PPI rounding guidelines: Results are rounded to the nearest whole number.
